The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct five-year status reviews of 25 endangered and eight threatened species occurring in one or more of the 10 states in the Southeast and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The public is invited to provide written information and comments concerning these species on or before May 27, 2014.

This presentation from Dr. Robert Baldwin of Clemson University provides an update to the Steering Committee on the Appalachian LCC funded research project. The Data Needs Assessment project is evaluating existing spatial data, assembling public data in geodatabase, defining conservation planning tasks that can be accomplished, identifying problems to address if data gaps are filled, interpreting uses of data, and conducting analysis of ongoing planning efforts.

At the April meeting of the Appalachian Landscape Conservation Cooperative, the Steering Committee tasked a work group to advance the identification of previously assessed high value conservation areas (HVCA) for which there may be a general consensus about their significance and relevance inside the LCC geography. This contributes to the effort of the LCC by identifying areas that can be promoted as needing special attention and consideration by managers (and others) in advance of more systematic modeling or LCC-sponsored analyses or structured decision-making and prioritization in the future.
