Managing for Healthy, Diverse Forests
-
How to manage for both wildlife habitat and timber value in Eastern forests by conducting responsible forest harvests that take the longer-term view instead of quick cash-outs. Up to 80% of the forests in Eastern States have experienced repeated "high-grade" or "diameter-limit" harvests that remove only the most valuable trees during each harvest, diminishing forest economics in the region and depleting wildlife.

Birds of a Feather on Working Lands
-
Storyboard discusses similarities between habitat needs of the Eastern golden-winged warbler and Western sage grouse, both bird species with declining populations due to habitat loss in working landscapes - but benefiting from NRCS Working Lands for Wildlife intervention.

Map of Priority Areas for WLFW-Black Duck Projects
-
Map used by the NRCS WLFW-Black duck partnership to denote priority areas for landowner sign-ups in NJ, DE, MD, and VA. This map is based on larger geographic priorities modeled by the Black Duck Joint Venture and Atlantic Coast Joint Venture partnerships for targeting Black duck recovery in the Atlantic Flyway.

Range-wide assessment of grazing and hydrology in bog turtle wetlands
-
In December 2018, a meeting of bog turtle experts was hosted in Richmond, VA and experts across the Eastern range of the species identified as a high priority the need to better understand the benefits and potential negative impacts of livestock grazing in bog turtle inhabited wetlands. Hydrologic conditions in bog turtle wetlands emerged as a secondary concern needing more research. Recently, NRCS’ Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) awarded funds to Dr. Carola Haas leading a team of researchers at Virginia Tech University to conduct an assessment on these two topics (grazing and hydrology).

Impediments to Prescribed Burning: NRCS Interviews
-
NRCS contracted with NC State to conduct a series of interviews with NRCS state office and field staff, along with some key partners, to collect observations on major impediments to implementing prescribed burning on-the-ground. The Executive Summary is posted here; for a copy of the full report contact Bridgett.Costanzo@usda.gov.

Priority Southeast U.S. Counties for Prescribed Burning Emphasis
-
This project was funded by NRCS and completed by NCSU in partnership with the Longleaf Alliance and Longleaf Implementation Teams (LIT) under America's Longleaf Restoration Initiative (ALRI). A set of counties within each of the 9 southern states in the longleaf pine range were identified by LIT staff as priority areas for implementation of prescribed burning efforts including executing on-the-ground burns, burn training workshops, establishment of Prescribed Burn Associations, and other activities where focused efforts can advance habitat management goals, improve forest health and mitigate wildfire risk.
